Meet the People Behind the Paw Prints
Over 70 years of combined veterinary experience, united by a shared passion for compassionate, fear-free animal care.

Dr. McKayla Peterson, DVM
OwnerFounder & Lead Veterinarian
Dr. Peterson was born and raised in Gillette, Wyoming. She attended Eastern Wyoming College on a volleyball scholarship, earned her Associate of Science Degree, then completed her Bachelor of Science at the University of Wyoming. She spent a veterinary-based semester abroad in Thailand working with many species including elephants. She completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts and spent her clinical year at the University of Florida.
Dr. Peterson and her husband Kaleb have two fur babies: their island dog Dobby adopted from St. Kitts, and their three-legged cat Ginny adopted during her shelter medicine rotation. She especially enjoys soft tissue surgery, dentistry, geriatric/quality of life care, and is certified in acupuncture.
“She fell in love with veterinary medicine because she wanted to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

Kaleb Kurtzer
OwnerHospital Administrator
Kaleb grew up in the small town of Sterling, Colorado, where he was raised on a ranch with his dad — fixing fences, feeding horses, and caring for his dad's first horse, Sajack, the namesake of the hospital. Life on the Eastern Plains taught him the value of hard work, perseverance, and family.
He developed a love for boating, fishing, and barbecuing, which for him is about gathering people together. Opening the animal hospital alongside his wife Dr. Peterson has been a shared dream.
“We are very proud to be a private animal hospital. We believe this better serves the community and their needs rather than a big corporation only looking at the bottom dollar.”

The diversity of the job is her favorite part — no two days are the same. She loves making patients feel comfortable and treating clients like family. Outside of work, Kim enjoys spending time with her husband, four grown boys, family, and pets, as well as watching sports, electric scooter rides, and thrifting.

She has experience in emergency, surgery, general practice, holistic practice, and veterinary dermatology, and is a certified pet-sitter. She has a passion for looking at each pet from a whole body perspective and exploring how holistic practices complement traditional medicine. When not at the front desk, she enjoys time on her small hobby farm with her two young boys, 4 dogs, 5 chickens, and her musician husband John.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her cats Frog and Cassian, and loves painting, baking, and gardening.
Adriana

Adriana has worked with animals since her senior year in high school, with experience in general practice, shelter, lab, ER, and specialty settings. She is currently exploring how holistic modalities complement western medicine, with specific interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and meridian connections to organ systems and emotions.
She is working towards an APA (Animal Psych-Aromatica) practitioner certification. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, writing, driving around the mountains, watching her chickens and ducks, and spending time with her dogs Tala and Titan.
